“7 x 7 in C molle” – Tanz Company Gervasi once again turns its attention to the work of Merce Cunningham, whose exploration of space was uniquely revolutionary—and is more relevant than ever today, as we are increasingly called to reflect on how space is distributed and assigned.

Seven dancers will share a space that, although seemingly restricted, has no predefined division. Their interaction will be a continuous negotiation: each will develop unique strategies to satisfy their own needs and desires, in a constantly evolving balance.

Gervasi and his company, active for 35 years with a changing ensemble of dancers, do not imitate Cunningham. Rather, they skillfully explore what the distinct style of this ever-experimental superstar—who passed away in 2009—still has to say to us today.
Confident bodies shape the space around them in a highly complex sequence of action, despite clear lines and precise movement patterns. They appear like time travelers, carefully investigating whether the place they’ve landed in is truly suitable for them.

"This is what a utopia might look like—one that still makes sense even in the face of the absurdity of our present moment, which seems to be unraveling with breathtaking consistency.”
