Is there a world outside the matrix of storytelling? Of course there is, and Elio Gervasi knows it well. In his new piece, he delves into the worlds of Trisha Brown and Merce Cunningham with eight dancers. The Italian-born Viennese choreographer reminds us that the two luminaries of American postmodernism “liberated dance from the obligation to tell a story”. This opens up a space for an intrinsically meaningful interplay of dancing bodies in music, space and time. Shifting Lines is a re-encounter of Cunningham’s movement composition that dispenses with the centralism of a fixed perspective, and Trisha Brown’s flow of movement, where one gesture shifts naturally into the next.
